15th of May 2024 – Swan Hills Members tour the Art Gallery of WA

On 15th may 2024 U3A Swan Hills visited the WA Art Gallery to view the exhibition by Year 12 students from Western Australia. They describe the different emotions they experience in their daily life in their works, and to all of us their exhibits were first class. The Museum gave us a guided tour of some of the exhibits after which we could wander freely around to take it all in. The photo shows the attending members on the stairs to first floor in the central foyer of the museum. The lady in the lower left corner is a prospective new member.

One exhibit consisted of two paintings by an immigrant student from Ethiopia who is influenced by the culture of her origin and the culture of her new country, another showed how life itself or stages in your life have an end by exhibiting mouldy food in an elegant display. The winning piece showed what was wrong with the school system in the mind of the student and the anguish for the student this entails. Not all exhibits were dominated by negative feelings, one student showed her loving relationship with her two brothers. Due to copyright laws none of these exhibits are reproduced with this note.

Go and enjoy this exhibition, it is worth its while.

Swan Hills Visits Perth Mint

The 29th April, 19 members from Swan Hills had a wonderful, entertaining and informative excursion to Perth Mint. The Perth Mint was once producing common day legal coinage, nowadays it produces gold bars and commemorative coinage for investors and collectors. Today, common legal tender is printed in Canberra. The Perth Mint has a great collection of natural gold specimens and gold coins, the 1-tonne gold coin will be remembered, and the gold pour and the story of the room in which it takes place is always a winner with the tourists. Afterwards all enjoyed a welcome lunch at The Grosvenor Hotel opposite Perth Mint. It is lovely to be a tourist in your own city.
